In the Beginning...

"Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life."
- Jack Kerouac

"Strangers share such alarming intimacy!"
-Mary Anne Radmacher Hershey
Back in November of '98, I was moving to England with a long-time girlfriend. I had given notice at my job, held several job offers in London, and was planning to move out in a matter of weeks. Then, things fell apart and I broke up with the woman (long story). Sitting in a pub in dreary London, I looked around me and decided I had no interest whatsoever in spending the cold, wet, and miserable winter there alone. Within a couple weeks time, I turned down the job offers, packed up the apartment, bought a ticket to Singapore, and was on another airplane headed for more gentle surroundings.

I enjoyed my time in South East Asia so much the last time I was there that I decided to try it once again, hitting some of my old favorites, but also trying to find some new and different points I missed last time. This trip was completely unplanned and entirely unexpected. Unlike my trip around the world or any of my shorter trips around Europe and Africa, this wasn't going to be a life-fulfilling voyage of discovery, a dream come true. It wasn't even going to be challenging. It was simply intended to satisfy my addiction to travel at a rocky time in my life. An escape, if you will. The hat was slightly more battered since my last time around, the heart was darkened, but the spirit remained.

Moving on...

If you read my first tale, you know of my love for stories. So here I am again. How could I resist the opportunity to tell another story? :-) While I was on the road, I created this site from internet cafés I found along the way. Unlike many other travelogues I've seen, I have here my entire journals. I edited them only to the extent of making them more readable and taking out some of the too-personal details.

The backpack is packed, the tickets are purchased and the apartment is in storage. It's time to hit the road!
